A look around the Internet, however, tells me this minor difference in sentence structure causes quite a bit of controversy. Some say one is informal while the other is formal. Probably not. Nobody is going to brand you as illiterate because you choose one of these forms over the other as they both say basically the same thing. Authorities seem to disagree to disagree, and actually get quite heated arguing for one or the other.
Thank goodness it does. English is confusing enough without mixing things up. More specifically, why do you feel this way? Let us know your reasons you feel one is more formal than the other.

I think people have way too much time on their hands if this is something they eel needs to be argued about. I have to agree. The first sounds more formal to me while the second is a little bit less formal.
They are worded differently. It amazes me what people will argue and get worked up about on the Internet. They both mean the same thing.
People get all worked up about things like this while there are real tragedies in the world. I think we all need to rethink our priorities. The argument between these two is nothing more than people wanting to create something to disagree about. Either is fine for any situation. There are two different aspects to consider when deciding which form to use. In this case, although the person writing is not on friendly terms with you, you can reply using the same form or if you think you want to remain more formal, use the other one, both are grammatically correct in this case!
Is it correct? What about "Merry Christmas and wishing you well. If we wrote each of the clauses in the first sentence as separate sentences and added the implied subject, "I," we'd have:. In case 1we only had to add "I," whereas in case 2we had to add "I am. I think that this issue would, however, go mostly unnoticed in a colloquial conversation.
For informal discourse, such as may appear in intra-office memos, I would say that this is fine. There is a stylistic problem when considering the two clauses about the conjunction, though. The verb for the first is in the simple present, whereas that for the second is in the progressive. This leads to the rather awkward:. While the meaning is clear, this kind of writing should not be used in more formal discourse.
Stylistically, the verbs for the independent clauses related by a coordinating conjunction should be in the same tense and aspect parallelism. Avoid for more formal writing though for the same reason.
The two independent clauses are not parallel:. This is a common question in my ESL email writing classes. For some reason, students are very eager to be informal in emails. The usual reason is they want to sound "friendly.
Formal writing just means clear communication. It is not unfriendly or heavy or serious or meant to express anger or hide true feelings, etc. Students also feel that in informal writing, the usual rules of grammar don't apply.
That's not true. Subjects such as "I" are usually omitted but otherwise, the rules apply.

Choose whichever you feel matches your situation and industryand whichever one you feel will allow you to customize it.
